Registration as a foreign student

Are you a foreign student residing in Leuven during your studies? Then you must register yourself with the city of Leuven as soon as possible. 

How to register?

This depends on your situation.

Will you be studying in Belgium for more than 3 months? *

What do you have to do? 

Notify the city of your stay of less than 3 months. 

Notification of your short stay

Will you reside in Leuven during your studies? *

What do you have to do? 

Register yourself with the Belgian municipality where you will reside.

What is your nationality? *
Are you enrolled at a Belgian college or university? *
Are you coming to Belgium for no more than 6 months for a mobility or exchange programme (e.g. an Erasmus exchange)? *

Report yourself as a mobility student

Do you reside in the Netherlands, France, Germany or Luxembourg? *
Woon je in Nederland, Frankrijk, Duitsland of Luxemburg?  *

You can choose between reporting as a border student and a full registration. 
What is the difference? 

  • Reporting as a border student
    • You reside in the Netherlands, France, Germany or Luxembourg. You wish to retain your address and right of abode there during your stay in Leuven.
    • During the registration you will receive an ‘annex 33’ as residence document. An 'annex 33' is only valid for 1 academic year.
    • You do not obtain a Belgian national number. If you would like to work, you can request a BIS number.
  • Registration in the Belgian national register (full registration)
    • We register you in the Belgian national register.
    • You will receive an ‘annex 19’ as proof that you have submitted your registration application. The ‘annex 19’ mentions your Belgian national number.
    • After the local police officer has confirmed your address, we will invite you to apply for an electronic residence card (EU card).

Your educational institution will register you with the city. You will receive an ‘annex 15’ as proof that you have submitted your registration application. 

After the local police officer has verified your address, you are registered in the Belgian national register and you apply for your electronic residence card.

Are you studying at a college or university in another EU country and are you undertaking a learning mobility period in Belgium, e.g. an Erasmus Mundus exchange or a cooperation between EU educational institutions? *

Pay attention: It is the educational institution which determines whether your studies in the EU fall under ‘mobility.’ Contact your educational institution if you have any questions in this regard.

Do you still have a valid residence card of the Netherlands, France, Germany or Luxembourg? Or do you have British nationality and do you live in the UK? *
Do you wish to retain your address and your right of abode in this country during your stay in Leuven? Then you can report yourself as a border student. You will receive an ‘annex 33’ as residence document for 1 academic year. *

You will not obtain a Belgian national number. If you would like to work, you can request a BIS number.
