Stay of more than 3 months in Belgium: registration EU/EEA national
Are you coming to Belgium for a stay of more than 3 months? Then you must register yourself in the city registry as soon as possible. Note: you may only submit an application if you are already living at your permanent address in Leuven.
You have 3 months’ time to complete your file. After an address check by a local police officer, and on condition that your application is complete and has been approved by the competent authority, you are entitled to a residence permit.
For whom?
You meet both conditions below:
- You are an EU/EEA or Swiss national.
- You are coming to Belgium for more than 3 months.
Not intended for:
- Foreign students
Are you coming to Belgium to study at a Belgian university or college? Then you must register yourself as a foreign student. - Non-EU/EEA nationals with visa type D

Who may apply for registration?
Only you may submit the application.
You may also submit an application for:
- Your minor child
- A family member who is coming to live with you in 'family reunification'
How to register?
1. Gather the documents
You must add some documents to your application immediately, others may be submitted at a later date (within 3 months)
2. Register yourself
You can do so online or at the city office.

- If you are not in Belgium, you can only make an appointment by phone.
- You will immediately receive proof that you have submitted your registration application (an ‘annex 19’ and possibly an ‘annex 8ter’).

4. Collect proof of registration
We will invite you by email to come to the city office to collect proof of your registration (‘annex 19’ and possibly ‘annex 8ter’). You make an appointment.

- National identity card or passport
- Invitation from the city
- The documents mentioned in your invitation

If you are not in Belgium, you can only make an appointment by phone.
5. We check your address
A local police officer will check whether you reside at your permanent address.
