Apply for, renew and collect identity card (eID)
Your identity card proves your Belgian nationality and identity.
Attention If you do not have Belgian nationality, you cannot apply for an eID. You must apply for a residence card instead.
When do you have to apply or renew your eID?
A few weeks before you turn 12
- You will receive a letter inviting you to apply for you first e-ID.
- Do you still have a valid kids-ID? Then you will only receive a letter when your kids-ID is about to expire. You do not need to apply for an eID any earlier.
If your identity card is about to expire
- You will receive a letter inviting you to apply for a new identity card. If you have activated your eBox, you will receive the letter in your eBox.
- Do you still have a valid identity card without fingerprints? Then you do not need to replace it. If it is about to expire, you will receive a letter.

What are you bringing?
- For an expiring eID: current identity card
- In the event of theft, if you filed a report with the police: proof of report (appendix 12)
You do not need to bring a passport photo. We will take a photo for free during your appointment.
Unable to come to the city office?
Are you unable to come to the city office due to health problems? Then we will come to your home.
eID lost or stolen: what should you do?
Block your eID
Call DOCSTOP to block your eID immediately.
Report the loss or theft
In case of theft, you report it to the police. In case of loss, that is not necessary.
Apply for a new eID
- Come to the city office in person, by appointment.
- Need an eID very urgently?
- Come to the city office during the opening hours, without appointment. You will immediately receive a temporary identity document (appendix 12) and can apply for a new eID via the urgent procedure.
- Is the city office closed? File a report with the police and request a temporary identity document (appendix 12). Afterwards, you can make an appointment to apply for a new eID.
Found your eID again?
You can no longer reactivate an eID that you reported as lost or stolen. Have the card destroyed at the city and apply for a new one as soon as possible.

How do you activate your signature certificate when you turn 18?
Did you apply for an eID before your 18th birthday? Then the signature certificate is missing. As a result, you may have problems logging in to the government online.
