Declaring a marriage

Do you want to get married in Leuven? Then you will have to file a declaration at the city office.

Can I get married in Leuven?

You can get married in Leuven if you or your partner officially live in Leuven.

Where and when you get married?

Date

You can get married at these times. Together we set a date during your declaration:

  • On Wednesdays between 11 a.m. and 12 noon
  • On Fridays between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
  • On Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

AttentionNo weddings on these days:
Wednesday 1 January 2025 (public holiday)
Friday 30 May, 11 July, 15 August, 26 December 2025 (bridge or public holiday)
Saturday 15 February, 22 and 29 March 2025 (Arenberg Castle not available)
Saturday 17 May and 24 May 2025 (Arenberg Castle not available, weddings will exceptionally take place in Kruidtuin).

Location

The City Hall closes for renovations. You get married at other locations:

How to declare?

1. Collect the documents

It depends on your situation:

  • You are born in Belgium (or have a Belgian birth certificate) and have always been registered in Belgium
    We will collect the documents for you. Make an appointment for the declaration (see step 2).
  • 1 of the partners does not have the Belgian nationality or was not born or registered in Belgium
    1. Provide us with your data.
    2. We will send you an overview of the documents you need.
    3. Once you have all the documents, make an appointment for the declaration (see step 2).

2. Make an appointment in the City Office

When?

Book an appointment.

  • At the earliest 14 days + 6 months before the wedding date
  • At the latest 14 days before the wedding date
For example
You get married on 1 September.
You can file a declaration from 14 days before 1 March.

Together we set the wedding date.

Who?

You and your partner come to the city office for the declaration.

€ 25.
You can pay cash or by bank card.

Do you not speak Dutch?

During the wedding, the civil servant spreaks in Dutch.

Does one of you not speak Dutch? You will have to bring an official interpreter. You pay the interpreter yourself.
