Terrace permit
If you want to install a terrace, you need a permit. Submit your request to Leuven police. It can be a temporary or permanent terrace, a terrace on public or private property, etc. You also submit a request to the police if you want to place a temporary structure on your terrace.
Conditions
Take into account the rules on installation, layout, heating and maintenance.
Installation
- At least four metres unobstructed passage for emergency services
- At least 1.5 metres unobstructed passage for pedestrians
Layout
You may choose the layout, but you must be able to change the layout, it must be high-quality and must not include any advertising.
Maintenance
- Your terrace must be cleaned by 7 a.m.
- Clear away any broken glass immediately.
Heating
You heat your terrace using gas or electricity.
Food and drink
Everything you sell as part of your business can also be sold on your terrace.
Awnings, wind screens and parasols
On squares there are additional conditions for awnings, wind screens and parasols
Smokers
Do you allow smokers on your terrace? If so, leave at least one side open.
How do you submit your request?

Collect the documents
- Operating permit
- Simple floor-plan on a scale of 1/100 or 1/200, with the correct dimensions of your terrace and indication of objects such as trees and road signs.
- Photo of the place where your terrace will be

Submit your request
You submit your request for a terrace permit to the Leuven police hospitality unit.
Request a temporary structure on your terrace at least 30 days in advance.
What happens after you submit your request?
After you submit your request, a file is drawn up and a check is carried out to establish whether all the conditions have been met. If the file is complete, the College of Aldermen takes a decision and imposes additional conditions.
