Voting by proxy in the elections on 13 October 2024

Can’t be there in person to vote in the local and provincial elections on Sunday, 13 October 2024, but still want to cast your vote? Then you can appoint someone as your proxy to vote in your name. This is not mandatory. 

Whom can you make a proxy?

  • You can make one other voter of your choice your proxy.
  • The person you make your proxy must be:
    • Least 18 years old.
    • Able to vote in all the elections in which you are eligible to vote. See who can vote.
  • Each voter can only have one proxy.

How do you make someone your proxy?

Step 1: Fill in the proxy form (in Dutch)

Complete the proxy form and have both people sign it (you and the person who will vote in your place).

Step 2: Provide proof

Provide proof that you cannot go to the polling station yourself. These are the reasons and the proof you add:

  • Illness or disability
    Medical attestation from a doctor
  • Profession or stay abroad due to your profession (also for family members)
    Proof from your employer
  • Deprivation of liberty (prison, psychiatric institution, etc.)
    Evidence from the institution’s management
  • Faith
    Evidence of religious administration
  • Study
    Evidence from the school board
  • Temporary stay abroad for personal reasons (holidays, family visits, etc.)
    Attestation with proof of your temporary stay abroad. You have the attestation signed in advance by the City of Leuven (in Dutch).
  • Self-employed activity (captain of a ship/inland vessel, market vendor, or carnival/funfair worker, including family members)
    Attestation with proof of your profession. You have the attestation signed in advance by the City of Leuven (in Dutch).

At the city office

Come to the city office during business hours:

  • Bring a printed and completed copy of the attestation.
  • Or complete the attestation on the spot.
By email

Send the attestation and a copy of your identity card (eID) via email. After we have approved the statement, come and collect it from the city office.

Step 3: Election day

The person you have made your proxy will vote at the polling station listed on their own invitation letter and at the polling station listed on your invitation letter.

The proxy holder will bring the following documents:

  • Proxy form
  • Your paper invitation letter
  • Their own paper invitation letter
  • Their own identity card
