Voting in elections as a non-Belgian citizen
Do you live in Leuven but do not have Belgian nationality? Then sometimes you can still vote in elections.
You can register to vote in the next elections in 2029 and 2030.
Did you vote in previous elections? Then you do not have to register again.
Which elections can you vote in?
If you are an EU citizen
You may vote in:
- The European elections in 2029
- The local elections in 2030 (municipal and provincial councils)
If you are a non-EU citizen
You may vote in:
- The local elections in 2030 (municipal and provincial councils)
What are the conditions?
- You must be old enough to vote on the day of the election.
- 16 years old for the European elections
- 18 years old for the local elections
- You must be officially registered as a resident in Leuven.
- You must have your civil and political rights.
- If you are a non-EU citizen: you must have lived legally in Belgium for 5 continuous years.

How to register?
You can do so online, at the city office or by mail.
You can register up to 2 months before the election.

What happens next?
We will check whether you meet the conditions.
If you are approved
- You will receive a confirmation by email or post.
- A few weeks before the election, you will get an official invitation telling you where and when to vote.
If you are not approved
You will receive a letter explaining why you are not eligible to vote.
