Closing days and times: when can your business open?
Closing days and Sunday shopping
The City of Leuven is recognised as a tourist centre. This means shops in Leuven are allowed to open seven days a week.
On Sunday shopping dates most shops are open.
Closing hours
Shops must adhere to legal closing hours.
Most shops that open during the day must be closed:
- Until 5 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
- Until 5 a.m. and after 9 p.m. on Fridays and working days before a public holiday
AttentionIf the public holiday falls on a Monday, the shop may stay open until 9 p.m. the previous Saturday.
Night shops may open from 6 p.m. and must be closed at 7 a.m.
Requesting different opening hours
You can submit a request to the City to deviate from the opening hours.
- Send your request at least one month in advance.
- There must be a collective benefit. Therefore, only requests from a group of traders stand a chance (not individual applications).
- We allow a maximum of 15 deviations per year.
