Border student: how to report yourself?

This is your situation:

  • You are not an EU, EEA or Swiss national
  • You reside in the Netherlands, France, Germany or Luxembourg. Or you have British nationality and reside in the UK.
  • You have no student visa (type D).
  • You wish to report yourself as a border student.

Do you have British nationality?
Exceptionally, you can also register as a border student if you live in the UK.
Pay attention: in this case, you may only travel out of and back into the Schengen area during the first 90 days of your stay. Do you still wish to travel after this period? Then we recommend that you apply for a student visa (type D).

What do you have to do?

You come to the City Office, by appointment. You immediately receive an ‘annex 33’ as residence document.

What do you need to bring?

  • National passport.
  • Previous 'annex 33', if any
  • Valid residence permit of the Netherlands, France, Germany or Luxembourg.
  • Proof of enrolment at the college or university.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means.
    Verify the monthly minimum amount
  • 1 passport-size photo
  • Your address in the neighbouring country.

Valid for how long?

An 'annex 33' is only valid for 1 academic year.

Does your residence card expire in the course of the academic year?
Then your 'annex 33' is valid only until this expiry date.

Extension of stay

Are you staying in Leuven for more than 1 academic year? Then report yourself with the city every academic year.
