A therapeutic garden for Ter Vlierbeke
Through the PACT project, we worked with Zorg Leuven to make the garden and walking path around Ter Vlierbeke greener and more attractive.
Which work did we do?
Redesign of the courtyard garden
- We planted trees, shrubs and plants that can withstand the effects of climate change, such as drought and heat.
- We installed rest areas for residents, visitors and staff.
- A water feature with a fountain provides cooling on hot days.
- A rabbit run adds more experience to the garden.

Outdoor environment
The redevelopment of the outdoor environment around the residential care centre will be carried out at a later stage.
How dit we do that?
1. Environmental analysis
Terra Therapeutica conducted a technical analysis of the site to identify the possibilities and limitations.
2. Participatory process
Survey
Residents, family, volunteers, neighbours, and staff were surveyed to identify their various needs and wishes. This was done using a questionnaire (both online and paper). A modified questionnaire was available for residents with cognitive disabilities.
Inspirational corners with idea boxes
Inspirational corners with idea boxes and wishing trees, distributed throughout the departments and in the central entrance hall, allowed residents, visitors, and staff to share their vision for greening Ter Vlierbeke. Staff members discussed these ideas with residents and helped gather ideas.
Analysis
The analysis of everyone's needs and wishes was translated into concrete design goals by a working group.

Why Ter Vlierbeke?
- The current green space around the centre showed little biodiversity and was not sufficiently inviting.
- Zorg Leuven wanted to work on nature-based solutions (NBS) with its residents, staff, families and local residents.
