What to do in case of snow and ice?

During the winter months, snow and ice often create dangerously slippery roads. The city takes action to keep municipal roads as safe as possible. You are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of your home or business.

When do we grit?

We grit based on weather forecasts from DTN Belgium in Heverlee. Only when there is a high likelihood of snow or severe ice formation.

Which roads and cycle paths do we grit?

First we grit:

  • Bus routes
  • Slopes
  • Near schools and emergency services
  • Busy cycle paths and cycle highways

We then grit the other municipal roads.

Regional roads
The Flemish Region, not the city, clears the regional roads and the cycle paths along the regional roads of snow and ice. These include, for example, all the highways and the ring road around Leuven.

Report slippery road or cycle path

Spotted a slippery road or cycle path? Let us know. Our gritting team will come by as soon as possible.

Clearing the sidewalk of snow and ice

  • In the event of icy conditions, you are required to clear the sidewalk in front of your home, business or property. You can do this by sweeping, shoveling or spreading salt.
  • When it snows, you must create a 1-meter wide passage on the sidewalk.
  • You are responsible for providing your own road salt.

Need help?

Request a clean-up from Wonen en Werken. They will come by to clear your sidewalk of snow and ice.

  • When: You can request a clean-up from December to February (not during the Christmas holidays).
  • Price: € 18 per length of 10 meters
  • How to request:
    • Request a clean-up from Wonen en Werken.
    • You can only request 1 clean-up at a time. You must request a subsequent clean-up again.

Waste collections

Put your waste outside

We do everything possible to collect waste as scheduled. Place your waste outside as you normally would for waste collection.

Tip: Keep your organic waste container inside
If you have a garage or shed, store your organic waste container indoors the evening before collection. Frozen contents can stick to the container, making it difficult to empty. A frozen container is also more likely to break.

Bring your waste back in if collection cannot take place

In case of exceptional weather conditions, waste collection may be canceled. Bring your waste inside in the evening and place it outside again the next day. We will try to collect it that day.
