Sagunto Primary School
Sagunto School is the second pilot of the LIFE PACT project in Madrid, aimed at creating inclusive and adaptable spaces that promote social cohesion and climate resilience. The proposed interventions were developed in collaboration with the educational community, incorporating innovations in urban design and nature-based solutions.

Creation of the School Square
One of the key proposals is the construction of the Plaza Escuela, a multifunctional space designed to encourage free play and interaction across generations. This area aims not only to serve as a recreational space for children and teenagers but also as a community gathering spot, naturally linking the school with the neighbouring interblock area.
- Inclusive and safe design: Lighting is planned to be enhanced to reduce the perception of insecurity, creating a more welcoming environment for everyone.
- Topographical variations: It is proposed to incorporate slopes and hills to break the flatness of the terrain, creating a dynamic landscape that enhances opportunities for play and exploration.
- Permeable fence: The installation of a new fence that combines security and visual openness is planned, strengthening the link between the school and its surroundings and encouraging a more cohesive and accessible environment.
Climate adaptation and naturalisation
The project also addresses urban climate challenges through the following proposed interventions:
- Naturalisation of interblock spaces: The planting of selected plant species aims to enhance biodiversity, capture carbon, and dissipate heat, assisting in mitigating the effects of the urban heat island.
- Sustainable urban drainage systems: The plan includes implementing systems to effectively manage rainwater, encouraging infiltration and preventing overheating of urban surfaces.
- Mitigation of extreme temperatures: The designed interventions aim to lower the environment's temperature by 2 to 5 °C, greatly enhancing habitability during the hottest months.
A space for everyone
The proposed design for Sagunto School aims to create a learning environment that blends education, play, and community ties. The Plaza Escuela and the planned climate initiatives are designed to alter the physical space and enhance the connection between the school and its neighbourhood, encouraging sustainability, integration, and collective well-being.
