Extension of stay
Is your A or H card about to expire and do you want to remain in Belgium? Apply for extension. Do so latest between 30 and 60 days before your residence card expires, because processing may take a long time.
- Do you have a single permit with a ‘fixed’ term?
Apply for extension through your employer. - Is your residence status ‘student’?
Extend your stay as a foreign student - Do you have an A card with another residence status or an H card for a single permit with an ‘indefinite’ term?
Follow the steps below:
Step 1: Gather the documents

- Have you applied for extension before? Then you will find the required documents on the decision which you received last time from the Immigration Office of the federal authorities.

Step 2: Apply for extension
You can do so online or at the city office.
Online
- Are you submitting an application for several family members?
Complete the form for each person separately. - Are you applying for extensionof the residence status ‘family reunification’?
Then you may submit 1 application for yourself and your minor children.

Make an appointment. You can do so online or by phone.
Do you want to apply for several family members? Then 1 person may come. Make an appointment for 1 person.

If you are not in Belgium, you can only make an appointment by phone.

What do you need to bring?
Bring the original documents. You may not present them digitally.
Step 3: We process your application
Processing may differ. Usually we have to wait for a decision from the Immigration Office of the federal authorities.
Step 4: Apply for a new residence card
Has your extension application been approved? Then we will invite you to apply for a new residence card.
