About Dark Matter Labs
Dark Matter are a strategic discovery, design and development lab working to transition society in response to technological revolution and climate breakdown.
Role in Pact
Dark Matter brings field expertise in policy, regulatory and financial innovation as well as data and technology, alongside Natural Assets domain expertise most notably:
- Trees as Infrastructure (TasI) is a city wide model for nurturing urban forests as live public infrastructure. By using smart micro-procurement contracts and system accounting for distributed tree planting and management, and a mass participatory deployment framework, TasI can reshape how humans are looped into the project. We aim to acknowledge and re-connect the true contribution of natural assets in cities.
- Nouveaux Voisins is a non-profit organisation aiming at transforming culture of green lawns and citizen’s relationship with their territory, through each person’s private yard. By fostering the collective regeneration of lawns in areas rich in biodiversity, Nouveaux Voisins also aims to reduce heat islands, increase carbon sequestration in sols and increase community resilience. Dark Matter is collaborating with Nouveaux Voisins, the MIS Maison de l’innovation social and the McConnell Foundation to deploy Nouveaux Voisins as a platform to develop a series of innovations that will serve other socio-ecological regeneration projects, through a range of discourse and tools.
Dark Matter works with the most ambitious mayors and municipalities in Europe to accelerate cities towards climate neutrality. A design partner to EIT Climate-KIC’s Healthy Clean Cities Deep Demonstration, since 2021 Dark Matter is part of NetZeroCities, a four year project supporting 112 cities in drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions while promoting system innovation, multi-actor and cross-sector collaboration.
Dark Matter Labs will assist Democratic Society with gathering data from the project’s engagement processes and generating insights and learnings from them. It will provide support in identifying the enabling conditions for participation in Leuven and help replicate them in Madrid and Kraków. The expertise that Dark Matter Labs brings in digital technologies, as well as policy, regulatory, and financial innovation, will complement Democratic Society’s integrated approach to participation.
